Myrtus is its official name but commonly called Myrtle. There are several Myrtle plant species with Myrtus communis L. being a popular genus used in medicinal preparations. It is mentioned in the bible as a flowering shrub with fragrant flowers. There are many studies indicating its usefulness as a medicinal herb due to its antioxidant and anti-microbial properties.
Even though I have never smelled or tasted the Myrtle fruit and flower, it is reported to have a unique taste and contains polyphenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity. Myrtle leaves can be mixed with beverages such as green tea or made into salve preparations for topical applications. Myrtle is just another example of how plants can be used to support our health and gives us another opportunity to avoid pharmaceuticals when possible.
